What are some of the symptoms of a sick rat?

We know that rats spread a lot of diseases, but they can easily get sick themselves. When a rat is sick it likely means that they have many of the illnesses that they can spread to you, which means that they can be very dangerous to you, your family and your pests.

The problem is that you may not know when they are sick. Unless you know what a sick rat looks like you may not have the slightest idea that it is sick, and this can be quite dangerous to you. In this case ignorance is not bliss. If you are looking for the symptoms of a sick rat, here is a good place to start. You have a rat as your pet you should know about these as well.

Unlike a cat or a dog, a rat’s nose is always dry, that is unless it is sick. If it is moist then you can be sure that something is wrong with the rat or has some kind of infection.

If you see that your rat has lost weight quickly or has gained it quickly, this is most definitely a sign that the rat is sick. If you notice this kind of rapid weight change then you will need to ensure that it is looked at by your vet. If it is a wild rat make sure you avoid this rat and that it cannot gain access to your home. It can make your family or your pets sick.

Believe it or not, rats cough and sneeze. You don’t normally hear things like this, so when you do it is a sign to you. If you should see a rat that has these common cold like symptoms be aware that they are much more serious in a rat. If you notice that there is a red coloring of the eyes or the nose this is a very serious symptom. This usually means that blood flood is excessive and is not circulating properly.

If you find that the rat is sleeping at times when it is normally awake this is also a sign of a very severe condition. Rats are nocturnal animals, so if they are asleep at night there is something wrong. If there is discharge around the eyes, nose or mouth this is also a dangerous symptom. Many illnesses, like rabies, show as this kind of symptom, so do not handle the rat at all. In fact you may need to move it away from your home ASAP.
