How to keep rats out of my garbage

If you have rats around your house, then you know that they can be quite a handful. What makes them worse is that they are not easy to get rid of. Once they have found a good home and a great source of food they are pretty much there to stay.

One of the best sources of food for them is your garbage. Rats are true omnivores, which means that they will eat anything they can get their filthy little mouths on. Your garbage area will provide them with a lot of tasty snacks that they can feed off of.

It is not even just the waste that you throw away that will attract them. They will frequently eat the bugs and insects that they find around these areas as well. These are a great source of protein and taste great to the rat so they will happily feast on fly larva and maggots, as well as roaches, beetles, and other insects. They are a great meal to a rat. You clearly do not want the rats around, so making sure that they do not have access to your garbage is a key to the success you are going to have in keeping them away. Here are some steps to make this happen.

The first thing to do is to make sure that you have garbage cans that are securely fastened. These cans cannot have holes or cracks in them that allow the rats to get in or you will not keep them out. This is not just about the garbage cans you have outside either. You want to make sure that there is no access to the ones in your home, including the ones in the bathroom and kitchen. Those that are made of plastic are usually the ideal ones to have. If you have a garbage can that does not close tightly or has a crack replace it.

You also want to make sure that you keep the area around the garbage cans clean. Make sure that there are no food pieces or other waste on the ground around the cans and also do a good job of spraying insecticides to kill bugs around the cans. Killing bugs will not give the rats a reason to come near your garbage. Inside your home it may be a good idea to put of roach traps to kill them so that the rats cannot feed off of these insects.
